Professor

Basic Overview

I did complete my Honors in Fisheries at the Fisheries and Marine Resource Technology (FMRT) Discipline at Khulna University in 2009. Following which, I completed my MSc at the same Discipline on Fish Genetics and Biotechnology in 2011. I joined the FRMT Discipline as a Lecturer on 03 November, 2009. I moved to Australia in 2013 to conduct the PhD degree at the Queensland University of Technology (QUT) under the supervision of Dr. David A Hurwood and Prof. Peter B Mather. I completed my PhD degree in 2017 with the research title “Understanding the molecular Basis of Adaptation to Freshwater Environments by Prawns in the Genus Macrobrachium”. Because of my outstanding contribution to the relevant field of study, I received the very prestigious ‘Outstanding Doctoral Thesis Award”. After completing the PhD degree, I came back to the FMRT Discipline, Khulna University where I am currently working as a Professor. During the course of my PhD, I became familiar with the state-of-the-art genomics tools for subsequent application in the field of fisheries, aquaculture and marine biology. I have been working on various genomics aspects of different commercially and ecologically important aquatic species in Bangladesh since my return from QUT.

PhD, Earth Environment and Biological Sciences School, Queensland University of Technology (QUT), Australia

MSc in Fish Genetics & Biotechnology, FMRT Discipline,KU

BSc (Honors) in Fisheries (FMRT Discipline, Khulna University).

I primarily use genomic techniques (DNA and RNA based tools) to elucidation the fundamental aspects biology, evolutionary relationships/histories among species, response to environmental stressors, and also the application of the modern molecular tools for improvement of aquaculture species as well as the management and conservation of wild fisheries resources. I undertake integrative and comparative research on the molecular, physiological, biochemical and cellular aspects of different aquaculture species as well as open water species to investigate the stress response mechanisms. My study species include both crustaceans and different fish species: black tiger shrimp (Penaeus monodon), giant freshwater prawn (Macrobrachium rosenbergii), orange mud crab (Scylla olivacea), different carp fishes (Labeo rohita, Labeo bata, Cirrhinus cirrhosis etc.) and the river shad (Tenualosa ilisha) which is the national fish of Bangladesh. Recently, I have expanded my research interest on the population genomics (using genotyping-by-sequencing) on the small indigenous species (SIS) of fishes of Bangladesh for their conservation (currently SIS are under severe threat of population decline). I am also interested in complete genome sequencing of target species and constructing evolutionary relationship (using phylogenomics) among different aquatic species.
