Effects of Environmental Stressors on the Biological Alterations in an Indian Major Carp (Labeo rohita)

This project was funded by the Khulna University Research Cell

The Indian major carp (Labeo rohita) is the most important aquaculture species in Bangladesh and is prone to particular environmental stressors (particularly salinity and temperature) due to global climate change. L. rohita is a primary freshwater species and any increase in aquatic salinity levels cause massive mortality in the lower Southern regions of Bangladesh due to salinity intrusion. Increase in water temperature can also adversely affect overall biology and farmed production of L. rohita. The proposed project aims to investigate temperature and salinity induced cellular, physiological, biochemical and genetic alterations in Labeo rohita that will ultimately help to improve the production performance of this commercially important species with regard to climate change driven issues (changes to water salinity and temperature).
