Masters Thesis: Sex determination and differentiation is a fundamental biological process that determines the suitability of a particular species for aquaculture. This is because farming of mono-sex population has gained a special momentum in recent years due to faster growth (increased economic return and profitability) and easy management (no risk of reproduction in the wild) of farmed populations. Research investigation on a wide range of aquatic species demonstrated that temperature, salinity and nutrients are the major environmental parameters that have direct influence on sex determination. Out of these three factors, temperature was found to have the most profound effect. For many species, higher temperature from optimum level was found to be male specific while for other species, reverse pattern was observed. Which temperature (high or low from optimum range) is female specific for commercially important crustaceans (i. e., Penaeus monodon) still remains unknown. Production of mono-sex female cohorts of P. monodon will be of great interest because females grow faster than the males. This thesis investigated the effects of temperature on these aspects of Penaeus monodon.
