Genetic Variability Assay of Giant Freshwater Prawn Post Larvae (PL) Produced from the Broods Stocked Under Different Sex Ratios

This research project was funded by the Ministry of Science and Technology, Government of the People's Republic of Bangladesh

The giant freshwater prawn (Macrobrachium rosenbergii) is a major coastal aquaculture species in Bangladesh. It also acts as a major export earning source for the country. A considerable number of prawn hatcheries have been established in Bangladesh that use broods from the wild sources (coastal rivers) for seed production. Domestication and brood stock development was an urgent need for this species to save wild biodiversity and also to ensure timely supply of good quality (domesticated) broods to use in hatcheries. In this project, we collected juvenile individuals of giant freshwater prawn (GFP) in ponds at different sex ratios. Results indicate that sex ratio of GFP had a strong influence on brood quality, maturation, genetic variation of the offspring and production performance.
