Pioneering Electronics and Communication Engineering (ECE) Education in Bangladesh

Electronics and Communication Engineering (ECE) discipline started its journey under Science, Engineering and Technology (SET) School of Khulna University in 1997. With a view to provide tertiary education in the field of modern engineering and technology genre, Electronics and Communication Engineering is included for the first time in Bangladesh at the undergraduate level. At present, the discipline is offering bachelor, master and PhD degree. With 11 professors, 05 associate professors and 04 assistant professors, the discipline has total 21 faculty members. Beside the academic staff, there is a team of 7 office staffs to assist in the administrative tasks of the entity. The discipline is housed in Satyendranath Bose Academic building and have 4 fully furnished classrooms. The classrooms are equipped with air conditioners, multimedia projectors and WiFi facility to provide better learning environment for the students. There are 5 labs at present named, Electronics lab, Electrical Technology lab, Communication lab, Bio-medical Engineering lab and Simulation Engineering lab to conduct sessional courses.Contact: +88-02 477 734 202

Professor S. M. Shamsul Alam

Electronics and Communication Engineering (ECE) Discipline at Khulna University holds a distinctive place in the history of engineering education in Bangladesh, being the first discipline of its kind established in the country in 1997. Since its inception, the discipline has consistently upheld a tradition of academic excellence, innovation, and professional success, earning a strong reputation both nationally and internationally.Electronics and Communication Engineering plays a pivotal role in shaping modern society, as it underpins technologies that enable communication, automation, intelligent systems, and sustainable energy solutions. From telecommunications and satellite systems to artificial intelligence, embedded systems, and IoT, ECE is at the heart of addressing the technological needs of the present and future. As I assume the responsibility of Head of the Discipline, I am deeply honored to be part of this proud legacy. In today’s rapidly changing world, marked by national development challenges and global concerns such as climate change, digital transformation, and sustainable growth, our goal is to develop engineers who are not only technically competent but also capable of designing innovative, technology-driven solutions to real-world problems. Our faculty members possess diverse expertise across a wide range of fields, including communication systems, signal processing, embedded systems, artificial intelligence, and emerging technologies. Many of them have pursued higher education and research in world-renowned universities across the United States, Australia, Europe, and Asia, bringing valuable global perspectives into our academic and research environment. The ECE Discipline offers comprehensive undergraduate (B.Sc. Engg. in ECE) and postgraduate programs (M.Sc. Engg. and PhD), supported by a dynamic and regularly updated curriculum aligned with global technological advancements. Our pedagogical approach integrates theoretical knowledge with laboratory work, sessional projects, seminars, and independent research, creating a vibrant and solution-oriented academic environment. With modern laboratories, advanced research facilities, and a resourceful seminar library, the discipline is actively engaged in developing solutions in areas such as smart communication, intelligent systems, IoT-based applications, and sustainable technologies—particularly relevant to the socio-economic and environmental context of Bangladesh. Our graduates have established themselves in leading national and international organizations, including top telecommunications companies such as Grameenphone, as well as in academia and research institutions worldwide.Looking ahead, we aim to strengthen research and innovation, expand industry-academia collaboration, and actively engage in international knowledge exchange to position the discipline as a global hub of engineering education and research. We warmly invite students, alumni, academic institutions, industry leaders, and development partners to collaborate with us in advancing knowledge, innovation, and sustainable technological solutions for the betterment of society.  Professor S. M. Shamsul Alam, Head, Electronics and Communication Engineering (ECE) Discipline,  Khulna University.
