Exploring the Socioeconomic Challenges and their Impact on Educational Outcomes among Lower-income Secondary-level Learners in Khulna, Bangladesh

Socioeconomic challenges significantly influence educational outcomes, particularly among lower-income secondary-level learners. This study explores the socioeconomic challenges faced by lower-income students and examines their impact on educational outcomes in Khulna, Bangladesh. The research follows a qualitative approach with purposive sampling to ensure the inclusion of diverse perspectives. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews with ten students and focus group discussions (FGDs) with five teachers and five parents from a selected school. Thematic analysis and document analysis was used to analyze the data, which was categorized and coded to identify key themes. Four major themes emerged from the analysis: (a) types of socioeconomic challenges faced by lower-income learners, (b) the effect of these challenges on students academic performance and engagement, (c) coping strategies employed by students, teachers, and parents, and (d) recommendations to mitigate the challenges and improve educational outcomes. The study reveals that financial instability, lack of access to resources, and parental educational background are critical barriers to students academic success. Teachers and parents noted the psychological stress experienced by students, which often led to decreased motivation and attendance. Despite these challenges, students expressed their determination to continue education. Findings suggest the need for targeted interventions such as financial aid programs, inclusive teaching practices, and community support initiatives to address the socioeconomic disparities. The study provides valuable insights for policymakers, educators, and stakeholders to develop strategies aimed at improving the educational outcomes of lower-income learners, contributing to a more equitable education system in Khulna and beyond.
