Abstract

A Road Traffic Information System (RTIS) has been designed using  Short Message Service (SMS) of 2G Cellular Technology for Dhaka City. For developing this, the information about mobile status and traffic situation of Dhaka city has been collected. The proposed system will implemented  using a combination of both radio and mobile phone based technology. The architecture of the system consists of three modules: i) System Collection Module, ii) System Data base, iii) System Output Module. System Collection Module gathers information of traffic situation at different fixed observation points of the city using radio link. System Database stores and preserves the information of traffic situation as a presentable form that may act as the central Database Server. This Central Database Server is connected to the Short Message Service Center (SMSC) of different mobile phone service providers through optical fiber. The mobile phone service providers have the access of data from the Central Database Server  and can also store them in their own Database server. The user can obtain the information by using SMS through mobile phones. The proposed  system is applicable to any city of developing countries like Bangladesh with the existing mobile phone infrastructure.
