Internet Use and Academic Performance of Tertiary Level’s Students: A Study on Khulna City

Internet is being now used everywhere in every moment. Students, almost tertiary level students have been using internet in their daily life for both academic and non-academic purposes. Internet is being used various reasons among these someone used it in different helpful ways and someone apply it’s their bad reasons. However, at the same time other literatures say that internet has positive impact on academic performance. As there was argument so, this study aims to trace out the relationship between internet use and academic performance among students. Quantitative research has undertaken and data is collected by a structural questionnaire. The target group of the study is tertiary level students in Khulna reasons. In this area have three types of tertiary institutions which are national, public and private university. We have taken conveniently equal respondents from each category (taking from each category 100) by compiled it has 300. These universities are selected Khulna University for public university, Northern University and North-Western University for private university, and Govt. B. L. College, Govt. Azam Khan Commerce College and Govt. Sundarban College for national university in the study area. Chi-squire test were used to show the association among variable. Binary logistic regressions were used to identify the significant factors. It has found that University Type (Public (OR=3.116, 95% CI (1.006, 9.786), p<0.05), Private (OR= 27.854, 95% CI (6.018, 251.844) p<0.05)); Mother’s Occupation (Housewife(OR=2.683, 95% CI (1.011,7.120), p<0.05)); Family Income (35500 to 49999 (OR=8.311, 90% CI (0.951, 24.026), p<0.10)); Study Time per Day at Home (2.01 to 5.00 Hours(OR= 3.925, 95% CI (1.312, 11.741), p<0.05)), Internet Use per Day (2.01 to 4.00 Hours (OR= 0.889, 95% CI (0.315, 2.513) p<0.05) & (4.01 to 6.00 Hours(OR=0.900, 95% CI(0.198, 4.084) p<0.05))); Most Preferred Search Engine (Google (OR=3.561, 95% CI (1.264, 10.034), p<0.05)); Social Media Purpose(>=33 (OR=4.987, 95% CI (0.301, 17.708), p<=0.05)) have significant effect on Academic Performance. On the basis of findings of the study we can say that Government may take some steps about using internet. Government should restrict the access of internet after midnight so that students do not spent time on entertainment or social media purpose.
