Regional Differences and Determinants of Short Birth Interval in Bangladesh

Background and Objectives. Southern Asia is facing mainly the problem of its overcrowded population. There are many factors including short birth interval that are becoming the reason of it’s over population in also our country as well. In our country, because of short birth interval, we are facing increasing fertility rate, child morbidity, child mortality and these problems differ from one region to other. This study was designed to assess the regional differences and determinants of short birth interval in Bangladesh. Methods. This study used a nationally representative Bangladesh Demographic and Health Survey (BDHS) 2014 data. After estimation of regional differences and the prevalence of short birth interval by background characteristics was calculated. Binary logistic regression analysis was conducted to calculate the adjusted odds ratio with 95% confidence intervals for selected factors. The spatial distribution of weighted prevalence with respect to districts also represents the spatial pattern of short birth intervals. Results. The analysis shows that the mother’s age at first marriage, mother’s age at first birth, sex of the previous child, mother’s education, father’s education, and place of residence have a significant impact on the length of the birth span of different divisions. Father’s occupation had an important effect on this study and showed a huge regional difference among divisions. The family composition may be an exceptionally critical determinant of birth interval in the individual-level model. The impact of the community-level model and lack of women’s education may work through a huge range of components, such as poor get to information, well-being absence of education, family planning unawareness, and prophylactic non-utilization. Women from well-off families and higher maternal education at a community level had fewer short birth intervals. Women from the provincial or rural regions have a shorter birth span compared to the women from urban regions in the community-level model. The impact of community-level poverty may work through a huge range of components. The higher poverty level in a community had more short birth intervals as compared to the lower poverty level in a community. There was a significant effect of watching television, listening radio and reading newspaper in a community level, individual-level and combined model. There were some effective individual factors and community-level factors that affect the short birth interval most. The analysis of combined model shows a less significant effect on this study than the effect of individual-level model and community-level model. There were less variables which were X significant in combine model than individual and community level model. Since the prevalence of short birth interval significant similar to regional differences. Public health policies and health programmers need to be considered the regional variation before implementing to overcome the problem due to short birth interval. Conclusions. Significant level public health interventions are urgently needed to improve the factors that effect on regionally on short birth interval in Bangladesh.
