Dr. Shaikh Jamal Uddin

Dr. Shaikh Jamal Uddin is currently working as a Professor in Pharmacy Discipline, Khulna University, Bangladesh since 2019. He started his academic career in 2005 as a lecturer in Pharmacy Discipline, Khulna University. He completed BPharm (Hons.) from Khulna University in 2004 with President and Prime Minister Gold Medal awards. To develop advanced research skills on natural products chemistry and pharmacology, later he moved to School of Pharmacy, Griffith University, Australia to pursue his PhD research, in the field of anticancer drug discovery from Bangladeshi medicinal plants through International Postgraduate Research Scholarship (IPRS) and successfully completed his PhD in 2011. After returning his discipline, he developed his own research group and continued his teaching and research as an independent researcher. He also completed postdoctoral research in 2015 at Division of Pharmacognosy, Uppsala University, Sweden, under the competitive EXPERT4Asia Erasmus Mundas fellowship. He also worked as an adjunct researcher for faculty of pharmacy, Ton Duc Thang University, Vietnam for 2019-2020. Currently he is serving as an Associate Editor in Frontiers in Pharmacology section Ethnopharmacology and as an Editorial board member in Khulna University Studies (an official Journal of Khulna University, Bangladesh).


Prof. Uddin’s main field of interest are ethnopharmacology and drug discovery from natural sources. He has more than 17 years of research experience in the field of drug discovery from medicinal plants and developed excellent research career in this field. As a principle and associate investigator, Prof. Uddin has won over 25 million BDT (Bangladeshi taka) in research funding including from Khulna University Research Cell, Ministry of Science and Technology, Bangladesh, Ministry of Education, Bangladesh, University Grant Commission, Bangladesh and World Bank. He has developed a number of pharmacological methods to evaluate the therapeutic potential of different medicinal plant extracts in mice model and discovered a number of bioactive novel compounds with different biological properties. He has already published more than 90 papers in high impact journals in his field of research. Dr. Uddin’s current h-index 32, i10-index 56 and total citations >3450 (source: Google scholar). For his excellent research record he has been awarded University Grant Commission best President Award in 2014 and recently Khulna University Vice Chancellor Award 2020. He was also awarded different conference and travel awards. He has developed a number of collaboration within the university and other national multidisciplinary research scientists. He established collaboration network with a number of scientist and research group around the globe including Australia, UK, Arab, India, Malaysia, Jordan, Brazil, Pakistan, Poland and China. He regularly attend national and international conferences and symposia to present his work. Currently Prof. Uddin is involved in different University committees and work as an active member of different professional organizations.
