Prof. Dr. Md. Wasiul Islam is basically a Forester. More specifically he has been trained-up as a conservationist focusing his research interests in protected area management, nature-based tourism, participatory forest management approaches and governance. Currently, he is on lien and serving as Deputy Chief of Party at a project ‘USAID’s Ecotourism Activity’ funded by USAID. He is working for the implementing partner of the project 'Solimar International' based on USA. Before joining as a Lecturer at Khulna University he was an Assistant Conservator of Forests (ACF) in the Bangladesh Forest Department where he used to conduct various research works on wildlife and tourism. He likes to work as a volunteer for various social and research activities. He is also keen to travel all around the world.

Prof. Dr. Md. Wasiul Islam has job experiences of more than 22 years. During this tenure of his active service life he has formulated, supervised and successfully implemented several research and development projects on different aspects of social and environmental sector.

He started his professional carrier as an Assistant Conservator of Forests (ACF) in the Bangladesh Forest Department under the then Ministry of Environment and Forests where he gathered practical experiences of conducting field research particularly in the Sundarbans mangrove forests. He used to conduct various research on ecotourism/community-based tourism, nature conservation and wildlife. At that tenure of his service he was very lucky to receive several important trainings on ecotourism, community-based tourism and wildlife in both home and abroad. He also worked there as a trainer to train various field staff of the Sundarbans.

Dr. Wasiul left the job of Bangladesh Forest Department as he got another job at the Khulna University as a Lecturer of Forestry and Wood Technology Discipline in 2003. Still he is working there as a Professor.

Currently, Dr. Wasiul is on Lien to serve as Deputy Chief of Party (since Sept 2022) at a project ‘USAID Ecotourism Activity’, (founding partner of Bangladesh Ecotourism and Conservation Alliance - BECA). He is working for the implementing partner Solimar International, USA. This is a pilot project implementing in the greater Sundarbans region where he is responsible to develop, manage and promote community-based ecotourism at the peripheral areas of the Sundarbans as well as other surrounding areas which is called greater Sundarbans region. The project is funded by USAID. Beside this, Dr. Wasiul is also involved in some other tourism related projects under various categories.

Dr. Wasiul has completed PhD in School of Business (Tourism Discipline), The University of Queensland, Australia. His did his PhD in the field of Protected Area Management and Governance Systems particularly co-management governance approach. His PhD thesis title was 'Adaptive co-management as an approach to tourism destination governance – a case of protected areas in Bangladesh' (January 2014 to March 2018).

Dr. Wasiul completed two Masters degrees. The first Master of Science was in Forestry from Forestry and Wood Technology Discipline, Khulna University, Khulna-9208, Bangladesh from June 2000 to November 2002. His thesis title was 'Financial and Economic Analysis of Cropland Agroforestry, Homestead Agroforestry and Annual Cropping in Rajshahi district of Bangladesh'. He did his second Master of Science in Forest and Nature Conservation (Minor in Leisure, Tourism and Environment, Specialization: Forest and Nature Conservation Policy) from Forest and Nature Conservation, Faculty of Environment Science, Wageningen University and Research Center, the Netherlands. His conducted two research projects under this Masters. The title of his thesis (major) was 'Co-management Approach and Perceived Ecotourism Impacts at Lawachara National Park in Bangladesh' (36 ECTS), and thesis (minor) was 'Policy Arrangements for Ecotourism: A case study at Lawachara National Park in Bangladesh' (24 ECTS), from September 2007 to August 2009.

Dr. Wasiul completed his B.Sc. (Hon’s) in Forestry from Forestry and Wood Technology Discipline, Khulna University, Khulna- 9208, Bangladesh from June 1995 to December 1999. His research project title was 'Agroforestry on the Degraded Sal (Shorea robusta) Forest with particular reference to Dinajpur Forest Division'.

Dr. Wasiul has 35 scientific articles published in peer-reviewed and reputed journals in home and abroad. He has several other publications including books, books chapters, conference proceedings, magazines, daily newspapers, and so on. He has presented his research findings in various national and international congress, conference, seminars and symposiums took place in both home and abroad. He had also taken different trainings from different professional organizations in home and abroad. He has been funded to attend these events through the Australian Government, GEF, IUFRO, FAO, IUCN, Asia Foundation, etc. Besides these research activities, Dr. Wasiul also likes to work as a Trainer to train various stakeholders on several issues of the environment. He also likes to work as a Volunteer to serve his community to make aware the people of the environment.
