Forest Entomology

Rationale: 

Natural and plantation forest are often infested by various insects and pests. Sometimes it is crucial to know their biology and management to reduce the loss of forest products.  Students of the course are expected to learn and understand the issues related to forest insects, their role and management to improvement forest health.

Course Objectives:

                 To provide knowledge on structure and biology of forest insects

                 To understand about insects’ role in forest ecosystem

                 To deliver knowledge on sampling and monitoring of insects in forest

                 To provide knowledge on different pest management strategies

                 To know different pest management techniques of insect pests in natural and plantation forest in Bangladesh.

After completing the course, the students are expected to be able to-

                 Identify major forest beneficial insect and pest groups

                 Differentiate insects into order

Aerial Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing

Rationale:

This course is designed for the 2nd year students of Forestry and Wood Technology discipline. Students of the course are expected to learn and understand natural resource management with the fundamentals of spatial data acquisition from airborne and spaceborne sensors. It will provide an introduction into the theory of spectral reflectance properties of vegetation, the principles of photographic analysis and aerial photo-interpretation and new advances such as LIDAR, SAR etc.

Course Objectives:

                 To be familiar with the methods of taking aerial photograph, analyzing and interpretation of this photograph

                 To understand the remote sensing processes of collecting and analyzing satellite images

                 To integrate Geographic Information System with remote sensing.

Intended Learning Outcomes (ILOs):

At the end of the course the students will be able to-

                 Comprehend the issues related to geometry of aerial photograph

                 Measure the height and area from aerial photograph

                 Be familiar with the photo interpretation techniques

                 Learn the fundamentals of remote sensing and GIS

Soil Conservation and watershed Management

Rationale: 

Soil conservation and watershed management is an important field of forestry education. Proper understanding of soil conservation and watershed management plays pivotal role in natural resource like forest management. This particular course will offer opportunities to learn major issues of soil degradation and the relevant conservation measures, estimation of loss, soil conservation for watershed area, planning and management of watershed.

Course Objectives:

                 To make students understand the soil erosion, its mechanism, effect and control measures.

                 To deliver basic knowledge of watershed area, watershed characteristics and management especially in a forested ecosystem.

At the end of the course the students will be able to-

                 Learn and understand major causes of soil degradation and learn solution for soil conservation.

Introduction to Forestry

Rationale:

Gathering knowledge on the extent and distribution, types, composition, condition, and contribution of national and global forests are foremost important aspect to have a good start of forestry education which has been considered towards reversing the overall trend of forest loss and degradation

Course Objectives:

                 To understand the concept of major forestry terminologies

                 To know about the status, problems, and prospects of global forests resources

                 To understand the types, distribution, composition, use, and issues related to various ecological and legal forests of Bangladesh

Non Wood Forest Products and Utilization

Rationale:

Forests of Bangladesh harbor wood as well non-wood resources. Non-wood forest resources are currently receiving wide attention throughout the country. The course intends to provide student general knowledge about the multiple-use, role, management, utilization and marketing of non-wood forest products and utilization.

Course Objectives:


The objectives of the course are-

       To obtain the concepts and perspectives of NWFP in Bangladesh.

       To broaden students’ knowledge about the collection, processing, manufacturing and marketing of NWFP.

       To provide some ideas on non-wood based industries like bamboo, cane, murta etc.

Rationale:

Students are expected to learn the fundamentals of environmental science, environmental pollution and interactions of forest ecosystems environment.

                 To acquire concurrent knowledge on climate and climate change

                 To have fundamental knowledge on environmental pollution  and environmental issues in Bangladesh

After successfully completing the course, students will be able to:

                 Describe characteristics of environmental problems and their relationships to the sustainability of life;

                 Explain basic principles of science, bio-geochemical systems, and their role in ecosystems;

Statistics

Rationale:

Statistics is the science of collection, presentation, analysis and interpretation of numerical data for the logical analysis in predicting and forecasting statistical models where one can improve the quality of data with the design of experiments and survey sampling. Thus, the students of this course are expected to learn and understand the concept of basic and applied statistics.

Course Objectives:

                 To learn the basic statistical terms and principles

                 To know about the data collection, classification and measures of central tendency and dispersion

                 To learn data analysis and how to interpret it.
