Md. Abdullah Al-Mamun Palash is a Lecturer in the Forestry and Wood Technology Discipline at Khulna University, Bangladesh. He holds both BSc and MSc degrees in Forestry from Khulna University and has developed his professional career around natural resource management, collaborative forest management, protected-area management, and ecosystem restoration.

He contributed to the Sustainable Forests & Livelihoods (SUFAL) Project under the Bangladesh Forest Department, focusing on collaborative forest and protected-area management. His work included digitally demarcating nearly 100,000 hectares of forest boundaries and developing site-specific management and restoration plans for approximately 36,000 hectares of forest landscape.

He subsequently joined the NABAPALLAB Project, focusing on Assisted Natural Regeneration (ANR) and Nature-Based Solutions (NbS) for ecosystem restoration, where he coordinated ANR interventions across approximately 200 hectares.

His field experience has shaped a strong interest in science-based and context-specific protected-area management, particularly approaches that integrate biodiversity conservation, ecosystem restoration, community participation, and sustainable recreation. He is committed to developing practical, evidence-based strategies for resilient forests, effective protected areas, and sustainable landscapes.

Soil Conservation and Watershed Management

SECTION: B (Watershed Management)

This course introduces the fundamental concepts and principles of watershed management, including watershed characteristics, delineation, watershed divides, and causes and consequences of watershed deterioration. It explores basic hydrological processes with particular reference to forest hydrology, including precipitation interception, infiltration, evapotranspiration, runoff, subsurface and groundwater processes, stream order, streamflow, and water budgeting. The course further addresses watershed management principles and objectives, watershed planning, data requirements, and integrated watershed management, with particular emphasis on watershed development challenges and management needs in Bangladesh.

Forest Management

SECTION: A

This course introduces the concept of forests as renewable resources, their characteristics, classification, and the scope and principles of forest management. It addresses forest management objectives in relation to ecological, economic, and social demands, with emphasis on the linkage between forest policy and management. The course explores participatory forest management approaches, including co-management, joint forest management, community forestry, REDD+, and CDM. It also introduces forest rotation and production periods, forest investment planning, and key financial concepts such as NPV, IRR, and LEV, along with forest business, management, and working plans. The course further addresses forest conflicts and conflict management, forest restoration planning, ecosystem restoration, vegetation mapping, and site-specific restoration planning. Particular emphasis is given to forest management systems, organizational structures, silvicultural units, and management practices in Bangladesh.

Forest Law and Administration

SECTION : B (Forest Administration)

This course introduces the fundamental concepts, nature, significance, and principles of administration, with particular emphasis on public administration and forestry administration. It addresses the roles, responsibilities, powers, limitations, and legal obligations of forest officers, as well as the legal framework governing forestry services. The course explores leadership in forestry administration, organizational leadership, team building, decision-making, problem-solving, and the application of different leadership approaches in forestry organizations. It also introduces participatory needs assessment, activity planning and management, and effective meeting and session management. Particular emphasis is given to public administration in Bangladesh, including the structure and reform of the Bangladesh Civil Service, human resource management, innovation, gender issues, bureaucracy, major administrative challenges, and the organization and functioning of forest administration in Bangladesh.
