Md. Rafiqul Islam obtained Ph.D. in Computer Science from Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) in 1999 and a combined Master (MS) and Bachelor Degree in Engineering (Computers) from Azerbaijan Polytechnic Institute (Azerbaijan Technical University at present) in 1987. He was a visiting fellow (a postdoctoral researcher) in Japan Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (JAIST) in 2001. He worked as head of the Discipline of Computer Science and Engineering of Khulna University and as Dean of the School of Science, Engineering and Technology of Khulna University. He worked as a professor in the Discipline of computer Science and Engineering Discipline, Khulna University from May 2005 to October 2009. Next, he worked as a Professor in the Department of Computer Science of American International University-Bangladesh (AIUB) from October, 2009 to September, 2014. Currently, he is a senior professor (professor grade 1) of Computer Science and Engineering Discipline at Khulna University, Khulna, Bangladesh. He has 32 years of teaching and research experience. He supervised Ph.D., Masters as well as Undergraduate students to accomplish their theses. Currently he is supervising several Ph.D. and masters students and working as a member of doctoral research committee for several Ph.D. students. He has published 144 papers, which have been published in reputed international and national journals as well as in refereed international conference proceedings. His research areas include design and analysis of algorithms in the area of optimization, image processing, secure cloud computing, external sorting, information security, network security, data compression, bio-informatics, grid computing, cloud computing, smart city, etc. Currently, he is doing research on the optimization process using metaheuristic algorithms. Recently a good number of papers have been published by him in international journals with high impact factors (See Publication).

My main research interest is doing research in the area of designing and analyzing algorithms. I have conducted research (supervised students) in the area of external sorting, bio-informatics, data compression and grid computing. We have designed several algorithms in the above-mentioned area. These algorithms have been published in Journals or in Proceedings of Internal Conferences. In short, my research interest in doing research is external sorting, bio-informatics, information security, information retrieval, corpus building method, data compression, grid computing, cloud computing, image processing, Big data, optimization etc.
