Phytochemical and Pharmacological evaluation of Alysicarpus vaginalis

The project work has been designed to investigate the crude ethanolic extract of Alysicarpus vaginalis, a shrub belonging to the family of Fabaceae for its phytochemical nature and selected pharmacological activities including anti-allergic and anti-hyperglycemic potentials. In order to ascertain the therapeutic uses of the plant, leaves or whole plant were subjected to explore for phytochemical nature and selected pharmacological activities. Phytochemical analysis was conducted to reveal major functional groups in the ethanol extract of the whole plant. This test indicated the presence of combined reducing sugars, flavonoids, glycosides, gums, saponins, steroids, carbohydrate, acidic compounds and terpenoids, those will be the reason of claimed activity of plant extract. In this studies, plant extract showed a significant anti-allergic activity as well as anti-hyperglycemic activity. In anti-hyperglycemic test the plant extract was screened and compared with Glibenclamide standard. The extract was found to reduce the blood glucose level to a significant extent. Along with anti-allergic activity test extract was able to decrease significantly TDI induced sneezing, scratching and nasal score and other allergic symptoms when compared with positive control. Also significantly increase the total count of WBC and the number of neutrophils, lymphocytes and eosinophils in a dose dependent manner. Therefore, the present study revealed the anti-hyperglycemic activities and anti- allergic activity of A. vaginalis which support its folkloric uses and required further research.
