Hepatoprotective, antihyperlipidemic, thrombolytic and antioxidant activity investigation of two medicinal plants of Bangladesh.

Nature is a great source of medicinal plants and a large number of valuable components have been isolated from medicinal plants which are being used as valuable drugs. These medicinal plants have been used as traditional medicine for curing various symptoms of humankind since ancient periods. The chemical extract of medicinal plant can be used directly or indirectly for the treatment of different ailments. Hepatic disorders including hepatitis, liver cirrhosis, jaundice as well as drug induced hepatotoxicity is adversely affecting the national health care system of Bangladesh and putting a heavy toll on the economy. Besides, hyperlipidemia and sinus thrombosis are also two alarming morbidity factors in our country. A few natural products have been introduced recently to provide ameliorating effect in these disorders. Although uses of certain medicinal plant supplements are recommended in several alternative therapeutic practices around the globe, we do not have much data on such use for the medicinal plants of Bangladesh. Present study aims to investigate two medicinal plants of Bangladesh which are used traditionally in the above mentioned disorders but have not undergone any scientific evaluation to establish their medicinal use.

Plant kingdom consists of a large number of therapeutically active compounds which are yet to be identified for their proper usage. From the view point of traditional usage, this project work has been prominently designed to investigate the hepatoprotective, antihyperlipidemic, thrombolytic and antioxidant activities of two widely used plants i.e. Glycosmis pentaphylla (Rutaceae), and Clerodendrum viscosum (Lamiaceae).
