CHARACTERIZATION OF MORPHOLOGICAL AND PHYSICAL PROPERTIES OF PEAT SOILS IN BANGLADESH

In the Gopalganj-Khulna Beels, the soils comprise alrenating layers of organic matter in

various stages of decomposition between peat and muck. The organic deposits are up to 5m

thick. Some peats grade downward into muck and appear to be floating on water. Soils in

which muck occurs at a shallow depth have a very low bearing capacity. The organic deposits

overlie clay at depth and some include clay layers between successive organic layers.
