About Discipline of Sociology, Khulna University

Since inception, it offers a wide range of courses at undergraduate and graduate levels, like population, gender, minorities, health, development, poverty, environment, disaster management, education, social policies, government and politics, urban and rural issues, human rights and law, which serve to broaden the understanding of all students in their respective interest. Moreover, these courses upgrade the quality of students in dealing with practical issues of the society. This Discipline has always been a center for highly qualified team of sociologists trained mostly in the leading universities of home and abroad with extensive academic and field experiences. Faculties of the Discipline are committed to the development of the nation addressing fundamental sociological theories and questions about the empirical world. In an ever-changing environment, the Discipline strives to provide students with diverse educational experiences, including traditional studio activities and applied fieldwork. Students of the Discipline, under close supervision, are engaged in both quantitative and qualitative research through advanced statistical modeling to explain the contemporary social, economic, political and cultural issues of the world and Bangladesh in particular. The Discipline has a seminar library having more than 15,000 books and journals on different issues of both national and global perspectives. Both students and teachers of this Discipline are involved in different co-curricular activities.

Dear audience, I, on behalf of Sociology Discipline, Khulna University, Bangladesh, welcome you all. For your kind information Sociology as a distinct Discipline started its journey at Khulna University under Social Science School in 2002. Its academic program was launched on 2 November, 2003 introducing ‘Bachelor of Social Science (Honours) in Sociology’ in the session of 2002-2003. In 2009, the Discipline stepped into more advanced level study by introducing ‘Master of Social Science in Sociology’. Besides the regular programs, a unique multi-disciplinary evening program entitled ‘Master of Population and Gender Studies’ was launched by the Discipline for the professional students in 2015. All the programs are designed to endow students with outcome-based education on interrelated facets of social life to make them able to cope with the changing local and global challenges. Students can have the opportunity here to learn from leading brilliant faculties from both inside and outside the Discipline who use latest teaching methods, practical examples, hands-on projects, and their own ongoing research to liven up and extend the classroom; and strictly maintain class and exam schedules. There are also arrangements for yearlong co-curricular activities for the students in which teachers also take part enthusiastically. The students are being prepared here for careers in academia, research, and other professional fields. Many alumni of us are, in fact, successful in academic sector, while a substantial number are working in public and private organizations at regional, national and international levels.
