Jay Gatsby as a Byronic hero in Fitzgerald's The Great Gatsby

This project aims at analyzing Francis Scott Fitzgerald’s portrayal of Byronic hero through the protagonist Jay Gatsby in The Great Gatsby. Applying Carl Gustav Jung’s concept of the archetype of the ‘collective unconscious’, this project explores Jay Gatsby as a Byronic hero. For this, a qualitative approach is applied. Jay Gatsby seems to possess all most all the characteristics of a typical Byronic hero. In the novel, he appears as an isolated figure, an outcast, a fearful personality, a mysterious person, an attractive and handsome fellow, a passionate lover and a self-destructive man. He also seems to have a questionable past. In other words, Jay Gatsby replicates the Byronic hero.
