Marginalization of Women in Anita Desai’s Clear Light of Day (MA project)

In Anita Desai’s novel Clear Light of Day, women are not only subjugated to men but also deprived of equal rights. They are confined to household chores and are not valued as individual human beings. In the patriarchal society they are valued in terms of their service to men. The male dominated society does not allow them to take decision for themselves; rather, the males decide for them. Moreover, women are thought to be inferior to men. Consequently, they face discrimination in every step of their life. Most of them do not have a place of their own and are forced to be subordinate to men. In the novel, all the women characters, such as Aunt Mira, Tara, Bim, Jaya, Sarla, Benzir, Tara’s mother and Benzir’s mother face marginalization. This project explores how women are marginalized in Desai’s novel.
