This study explores the themes of survival and human helplessness in Jack London‟s “To Build a Fire" and Stephen Crane‟s “The Open Boat.” Both stories show how human beings struggle against the indifferent power of nature. The research aims to understand how the characters experience fear, weakness, and courage while facing natural forces that are beyond human control. Using an ecocritical and naturalist approach, the study examines how nature acts not as a silent background but as an active presence that tests human strength and pride. Through close reading, the research finds that both writers reveal the same truth. Human life is fragile and nature is powerful. The man in “To Build a Fire” faces deadly cold, while the men in “The Open Boat” fight the restless sea. In both, nature remains indifferent, reminding us that survival is not always about winning but about accepting our limits with dignity. The study concludes that helplessness is not a weakness; rather, it is a part of being human. These stories remind modern readers to respect nature and understand that harmony, not control, is the key to real survival.
