“No Man at All Can Be Living Forever, and We Must Be Satisfied: A Philosophic Resignation: A Study of Synge’s Riders to the Sea”

This research delves into the interplay of pantheism, religion, and cultural identity in J.M. Synge’s Riders to the Sea, examining how these elements collectively shape philosophical resignation and resilience in the face of mortality. Through the lens of pantheistic reverence for nature, religious faith, and the cultural resilience of the Aran Islanders, the study explores how the sea serves as both a life-giver and life-taker, symbolizing the inevitability of death. By employing Spinoza’s Pantheism, Frankl’s Logotherapy, and Halbwachs’ Cultural Memory Theory, this project bridges literary analysis with philosophical and theological discourse. The findings highlight the universal human experience of enduring hardship, reflecting on how belief systems offer solace and meaning amidst life’s transience. This exploration positions Riders to the Sea as a timeless meditation on humanity’s quest for acceptance and the profound resilience embedded in cultural traditions.
