Digital Humanities in Bangladesh: Emergence and Challenges

Digital humanities (DH), also known as ‘’humanities computing’’ or “computing in humanities”, is an academic discipline that emerged from the humanities that converts and processes data and documents from analogue to digital. It deals with the transformation of humanities into digital humanities (digitised or remediated) as well as born-digital materials in the humanities. Primarily in the early stages, it tried to provide digital scholars and teachers with technical support, and, gradually, as its worldwide demand and appeal grew, it has become so vast that it encompasses all branches of the humanities.  Though the name itself suggests that DH deals with the humanities, it is trans-disciplinary or interdisciplinary in scope and nature, which is being practised as a global discipline across multiple languages. In Bangladesh, DH is still a new concept as a discipline, but researchers, teachers, and students are using tools of DH alongside DH methodological and pedagogical approaches individually as 'digital immigrants' in the teaching and learning process. This study will examine the emergence and full scope of DH in Bangladesh. It will also pinpoint how educational institutions can incorporate DH or shift and expand the scope of digital humanities in a pedagogical setting in the discipline of the humanities. The research will further investigate the major challenges to expanding DH in Bangladesh's current context.
