Woman’s Agency: A Feminist Study of Jhumpa Lahiri’s Select Short Stories

Shoba and Miranda in  Jhumpa Lahiri's “A Temporary Matter” and “Sexy” are the two working women and therefore have their economic independence. Shobha decides to live alone away from Shukumar and signs the lease papers for a new apartment and Miranda decides to break up her illicit affair with Dev.  These decisions are reflective of their confidence, self-consciousness and self-respect. The research objective of Hasna Hena, in this project was to explore how the protagonists’ (Shoba and Miranda) decisions work against patriarchy and to explore how the idea of agency can be read in light of the decisions taken by the two protagonists.
