EXPLOITATION THROUGH RELIGION IN SYED WALIULLAH’S TREE WITHOUT ROOTS

Syed Waliullah raised questions on religious influence in our society in Tree Without Roots.  Critics have discussed and interpreted this novel from an existential point of view. Fahima Akhter., in this project, discusses how religion is used as a hegemonic tool. The protagonist of this novel used the villager's blind faith in religion to his own benefit. Her objective was to investigate how people dominate using religion for their own benefits, to explore how simple-minded people fall victim to the exploitation and to study how an exploiter becomes desperate to maintain his power using Antonio Gramsci’s idea of hegemony.
