Social Dynamics of the Partition in Hasan Azizul Huq’s Agunpakhi

The Partition of the Indian Subcontinent in 1947 was not just the division of land, it was also a division of many families, many dreams. Agunpakhi, a novel by Hasan Azizul Huq, is a representation of that severance narrated by a mother, a wife, and above all a human being who prioritizes her consciousness and understanding of the happenings over her emotion. Shaira Noshin, in this project finds that, women, as a segmented society, usually do not participate in the notion of nationhood directly. Though there were young women who participated in the nationalist or anti-British movements but their stories are unheard. Women, in Partition literature, have mostly been presented as witnesses and sufferers of the movements rather than active participants. Agunpakhi is exceptional in case of this traditional representation of women. The whole story is about a woman, who narrates her own story, where we find her notion of nationhood. She is not a political activist, but she has her own idea of nationhood. Noshin's objective was to find and analyze different perceptions about the Partition and to examine the social dynamics of the Partition through the presentation of the characters and narration using Karl Marx’s materialist conception of history.
