Chemical and microbial investigation on Momordica charantia seed lipid

Momordica charantia also known as the bitter gourd is widely used as a food and medicine in Asian countries. Momordica charantia has long been regarded and collected as a food and medicinal plant in Bangladesh. In the present study, lipids were extracted from Momordica charantia seed and the value was found to be 15.82% and determining the chemical composition. In addition, saponification value, iodine value, acid value, percentage (%) of free fatty acid, ester value, and percentage of (%) glycerin of extracted lipids were determined, and the values were found to be 273.43, 67.28, 2.02, 1.01, 271.41, 14.84, respectively. Lower acid value, higher saponification value, moderate iodine value, and low set-to-touch drying time indicate that Momordica charantia seed oil is a good drying oil and could be used in the paint and coating industry. The antibacterial activities of the extract were determined against one gram-positive bacteria and two gram-negative bacteria. Momordica charantia seed lipid showed a good effect on Staphylococcus aureus and Pseudomonas aurigonisa as compared to ciprofloxacin. Overall,  Momordica charantia seed lipids could be used as medicine and pesticides as well as edible oil.
