Development of magnetic carbonaceous materials from agro waste for the removal of radionuclides

Environmental and public health are seriously threatened by radionuclide contamination of water and soil from nuclear energy generation, industrial operations, and unintentional discharges. Because they are persistent and harmful, radionuclides can bioaccumulate and endanger ecosystems over time. Secondary contamination, limited efficiency, and high expense are some of the drawbacks of current remediation methods. In order to effectively remove radionuclides from polluted settings, this research attempts to generate magnetic carbonaceous materials (MCMs) made from agro-waste.

An economical and environmentally beneficial starting point for the production of sophisticated adsorbents is agro-waste, a plentiful and renewable resource. The suggested MCMs will allow for better adsorption and simple separation using magnetic fields by fusing the magnetic characteristics of iron-based nanoparticles with the large surface area, porosity, and functional diversity of carbon materials. The study aims to describe the structural and functional characteristics of MCMs, improve the synthesis process, and assess how well they remove radionuclides including strontium, cesium, and uranium. In addition to creating an efficient method for radionuclide cleanup, this research encourages sustainable waste valuation, which supports the objectives of the circular economy and environmental sustainability.
