ASSESSING CARBON SEQUESTRATION IN THE COASTAL REGION OF BANGLADESH

Achieving carbon neutrality is a critical global objective, highlighted in the Paris Agreement, the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), and the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) guidelines. Carbon neutrality is the balance of the amount of carbon that is emitted in the environment and the amount of carbon that is captured by the environment. Central to this goal is the need for accurate assessment and enhancement of carbon sequestration in order to shape effective climate policies and actions.

This study is for efficient and scalable methods to estimate carbon sequestration, especially in coastal region of Bangladesh. Traditional approaches such as field-based biomass measurements are accurate but often costly, time-consuming, and limited in spatial coverage. In contrast, integrating remote sensing and GIS offers a more practical alternative by enabling large-scale, non-destructive monitoring with high-resolution spatial and temporal data. Remote sensing supports the assessment of vegetation health, canopy structure, and land cover changes, while GIS facilitates spatial analysis, modeling, and the integration of environmental variables like elevation, soil type, and rainfall.
