The comprehensive exploration conducted throughout this
thesis sheds light on the intricate dynamics of rapid urbanization and its
profound implications on farmland conversion and the well-being of farmers in
Bangladesh. Through a meticulous analysis of farmer experiences, socio-economic
trends, and policy frameworks, this research underscores the urgency of
addressing the multifaceted challenges posed by urban encroachment into
agriculturally productive regions.
The findings unveiled a stark reality: the loss of arable
land represents a critical threat to farmers' livelihood. The conversion of
fertile lands into residential or commercial zones, coupled with forced
displacement of farmer households, exacerbates socio-economic vulnerabilities
and fractures established community ties. The narratives of farmers, rich with
emotion and urgency, underscore the imperative for holistic policy
interventions that prioritize the preservation of farmers' rights and well-being
amidst rapid urbanization.
However, amidst these challenges lie opportunities for
transformative change. By bridging existing gaps in the literature and aligning
with national policies on agriculture and land use, this research offers
valuable insights for policymakers and stakeholders alike. It advocates for
sustainable urban growth strategies that balance economic development with
environmental conservation and social equity. By fostering dialogue and
collaboration among diverse stakeholders, the research aims to catalyze action
towards ensuring the resilience and prosperity of farming communities in the
face of evolving urban landscapes.
