Impact of Flood on Livelihood of the people: A study at Koyra Upazila of Khulna District

Bangladesh, one of the natural disaster prone countries has been significantly affected by various types of natural disasters. This study was an attempt to prevent of risk strategies of flood affected people in south western region of Bangladesh. Following survey method the study was carried out in Koyra Upazila under Khulna District. Being an explanatory study, 80 respondents were selected by purposive sampling, from Koyrа Upazila. The result from the study described that most the people of this area were illiterate and have very poor education which leads them lower occupational status as well as lower income level. Social, economic and psychological impact is described in this paper Under the social aspect, 17.5 percent of the respondents have high impact on health. 20.0 percent of the respondents have moderate impact on health and 62.5 percent of the respondents have low impact on health 51.3% of the sampled households do not get sick during the floods. Moreover 10.0 percent of the respondents were affected by cholera and 8.8 percent of the respondents affected by diarrhea. And another 30.0 percent affected by skin diseases. Under the economic aspect, (73.8%) indicated that land value was decline in their locality Furthermore, (10.0%) indicated that land value was not decline in their locality and the later 16.3 percent of the respondents have no destruction in the land.35.0 percent of the respondents affected by food, 12.5 percent of the respondents affected by education, 46.3 percent of the respondents affected by sanitation and 6.3 percent of the respondents affected by water. Under the psychological aspect, 38.8% of the respondents didn't fall in mental depression after flood 45.0% of the respondents fall in mental depression sometimes after flood. During and after flood period most of the times the non-governmental organization comes to the vulnerable population to give different types of facilities.
