Livelihood resilience and climate change induced seasonal working migrants: A study on southwest coastal region of Bangladesh

The idea of resilience, especially livelihood resilience, is the new concept to study, has gained popularity in the study of humanitarian development. In recent times, climate change and livelihood resilience have interlinked in the context of the southwest coastal region of Bangladesh. Due to climate vulnerabilities, people of the southwest coastal region of Bangladesh choose migration as the most effective resilience strategy to secure their livelihood. The present study seeks the predictors of climate change and livelihood resilience which induce the working class of people to choose work migration as a strategy. The present study illustrates the influence of climate vulnerabilities and livelihood resilience on seasonal work migration through conducting a survey and in-depth interviews using a semi- structure interview schedules on 256 randomly selected participants from the three coastal village of southwest region of Bangladesh during the year-round of 2021. Binary logistic regression and in-depth analysis of the study illustrate that socio-demographic and livelihood factors including income of the participants, family expenditure, livestock such as cows, goat and poultry, valuable possession such as gold, TV, fridge and cash money, ownership of farm, health status, skill on aquaculture, road condition of the locality and availability of facilities such as market, school and community clinic significantly influence the migration decision of the people. Besides, climate vulnerabilities such as change in traditional land use due to river erosion and salinity intrusion, increase of temperature, destruction of farmland and damage of embankment found statistically significant factors of seasonal work migration. Migration for work towards the city has become a prominent strategy to raise the standard of livelihood and to cope with the climate vulnerabilities of the coastal region of Bangladesh, proper information and intensive support have to provide for save livelihood and successful work migration.
