Role of Educational Institutions in Disaster Management.

This research explores the role of educational institutions during disaster. It has the significant for the policymaker, academician and development workers also.

Disaster is a common issue in the coastal region of Bangladesh. Almost every year southern part of the country face one or two cyclone. Schools and Colleges of those vulnerable areas play a vital role in spreading disaster management. The main objective of the study is to understand the contribution of educational institution in cyclone prone areas. The nature of the study was descriptive, based on case study, focus group discussion (FGD) and key informant interview (KII) methods. The study area of this research was in Dacope Upazila, Khulna. The study tried to find out the contributions of the schools or colleges during catastrophes. The study concerns about role of educational institution in disaster risk reduction and mitigation process. Findings of the study indicates spread awareness and knowledge about disaster management, disparity among primary and secondary level institution's activity in risk reduction, low funds in the institutions regarding disaster management and variety in the disaster mitigation procedure between northern institutions and southern institutions in Dacope. To mitigate such kind of situation the study recommended GO and NGO collaboration with educational institutions. Government should give aid to the affected people with recommendations of local school.
