Social Injustice of Disaster Relief: A Qualitative Study in the Southwestern Coastal Regions of Bangladesh

The study shows several elements of social injustice in disaster relief. These include power and political dynamics, corruption, economic inequalities, age and gender-based marginalization, discrimination based on religion, and cultural and social norms, all leading to poor communication and information transfer. It was found that increased political connections usually led to a lack of preparedness and response in disaster aid. Corruption and poor leadership, represented by corruption, nepotism, and misallocation, increase existing inequalities. Moreover, cultural viewpoints, gender-specific vulnerabilities, and biases rooted in religion cause social discrimination and stigma, preventing equitable assistance distribution.
