MICROBIAL CONTAMINATION OF DRINKING WATER OF SECONDARY SCHOOLS IN JHENAIDAH SADAR UPAZILA, BANGLADESH (MS Thesis)- Degree Awarded

Abstract:

The study aims to assess the microbial quality of drinking water from different secondary school in Jhenaidah sadar upazila. A total of 15 samples were investigated to assess the contamination of total coliform, fecal coliform, E. coli and Vibrio cholera according to APHA (1992). The maximum count of total coliform was found 450 CFU/100 ml, that of fecal coliform was 298 CFU/100 ml, E. coli was 50 CFU/100 ml and Vibrio cholera was 20 CFU/100 ml. The minimum count of total coliform, fecal coliform, E. coli, and Vibrio cholera was 20 CFU/100ml, 1 CFU/100 ml, 0 CFU/100 ml, and 0 CFU/100 ml, respectively. According to the WHO health risk assessment, 33.33% of the drinking water of secondary school is in the no-risk category, 13.33% is at low risk, 53.33% is at medium/intermediate risk category. The recorded data suggests that the quality of drinking water samples do not satisfy the Bangladesh and WHO drinking water standards. Therefore, this study recommends an effective monitoring system to reduce the microbiological danger of the drinking water of secondary school in Jhenaidah sadar. Raising public awareness can help prevent this kind of problem.
