TREATMENT OF GREYWATER BY PLASTIC CHAR AND COCONUT HUSK BIOCHAR FILTERS (MS Thesis)- Degree Awarded

Abstract:

Treatment of greywater has been a significant issue in recent days. Using biochar for greywater treatment is very effective. PET bottles are also a significant waste which can be converted into synthetic chars. This study was conducted to see if the plastic made chars are good as a filter media and it was compared with coconut biochar filter media for treating greywater. Plastic-char and coconut-shell biochar were made by pyrolysis process in 550°C and 450°C respectively.  The result of the physico-chemical parameters showed that plastic chars filters has a high removal efficiency for TDS (71%), Turbidity (46%), EC (26%), DO (increased 61%), BOD (37%), Iron (60%), Phosphate (64%), Sulphate (47%), Nitrate (39%), Sodium (25%), Potasium (7%), Calcium (65%), Magnesium (71%), Chloride (46%), Bi-carbonate (46%), Total Coliform (76%), Fecal Coliform (71%) and  Ecoli (59%). Comparing with coconut-char filter, plastic-char filter’s removal efficiency was higher. There was no significant change seen for temperature and pH for both filters. ANOVA analysis showed that the p-values are within significance level (0.05) and has variance among raw samples and all the filtrated water. The result suggested that plastic-char maybe a good filter media for treatment of greywater.
