Climatic Events and Involuntary Non-migration Decision: A Study in Southwestern Coastal Bangladesh

This study tries to explore the factors that affecting involuntary non-migration decision in the Southwestern coastal region in Bangladesh. Total 270 non-migrants people have been selected a through multi-stage sampling technique for this study. Analytical methods such as logit regression, summary statistics, principal component analysis (PCA) are used to achieve the objective of the research. The author finds, most of the trapped people aged between 36-45 years and the primary educated people frequently fall into trapped. Local Mahajans have an impact at the time of taking migration decision. Since 62.96 percent of the respondent avail loan from local Mahajan and most often the loan borrower failed to repay that loan on due time Hence, the local Mahajans forced them to be trapped. Author finds, male are the decision maker at the time of migration related decisions arise. The coefficient of credit sources reveals that 9.1 percent people are less likely to take migration decision compared to those who has a less credit source.  Author finds that 86.67 percent respondent have a migration history where migration history (71.11 percent) is greater than their female counterparts (15.56 percent). If the sources of credit increases, people will fall in debt more frequently. Author finds that, there is a positive significant impact of disaster risk on the involuntary non-migrants people and it is statistically significant at 1 percent level. This study also explored that bad physical condition, weak mentality that does not permit to migrate. The negative coefficient of ability does not permit to migrate indicates that they are 1.8% less likely to migrate compared to those are able to migrate.
