Exploring the Determinants of the Socioeconomic Resilience among the Disaster-affected Communities in Coastal Bangladesh

Bangladesh's coastal regions are increasingly vulnerable to natural hazard triggered disasters and climate change, resulting in persistent cycles of poverty and vulnerability. This study investigates the determinants of socioeconomic resilience among disaster-affected communities in Barguna District by employing a quantitative approach that integrates household surveys, semi-structured interviews, and statistical regression analysis. One hundred ninety-one coastal households participated in this study. The findings indicate that food security, institutional networks, and access to clean water are critical drivers of resilience, while revealing unexpected challenges, such as the negative association between disaster shelter use and recovery. Contrary to prevailing assumptions, demographic factors such as age, education, and marital status have a minimal impact, underscoring the primacy of structural and community-level influences in shaping resilience. This study emphasizes the necessity for targeted policies to enhance disaster preparedness, strengthen institutional support, and develop robust infrastructure tailored to local contexts. By advancing the understanding of resilience in disaster-prone regions, this research provides actionable insights for policymakers, contributing to sustainable development and equitable disaster risk reduction in Bangladesh and beyond.
