Fabrication of water repellent, self-cleaning polymer surface from black smoke

Super hydrophobic surfaces having excellent water repellency are significant in showing self-cleaning properties. There are many naturally obtained biological surfaces that exhibit super hydrophobicity due to their micro\ Nano structures. Artificially deposited surface of soot obtained from the partial combustion of gasoline are found to have great water repellency due to their Nano\micro structured surface. To improve the fragility of the deposited carbon soot, the effect of curing temperature and curing time was investigated thoroughly. The present study suggests a fabrication technique of fabrication of water repellent surface by replication process using poly (dimethyl siloxane) (PDMS) and poly styrene sheet. Primarily the replication was carried out from carbon sooth onto PDMS and then from PDMS onto the polystyrene sheet. The obtained surfaces were characterized by micro-image and wetting properties. This whole process experiment and method of is low cost effective, simple, less time consuming and environmental friendly.
