Developing Corporatization Model for Faecal Sludge Management in Khulna City

This study intends to develop whether and how faecal sludge management (FSM) corporatize in Khulna city by analysing existing condition of FSM, institutionalization process of FSM, willingness to pay (WTP) and challenges regarding implementing different facets of FSM business model. Khulna, the third metropolitan city, accommodates over 1.5 million populations through onsite sanitation system where FSM is usually limited to a manual or mechanical de-sludging service provided by private sweepers or municipal agencies causes one of the most crucial problems not only for public health but also for environmental balance costs huge monetary value. The research has followed convergent parallel mixed method design as research approach where three types of residential area has been selected. Questionnaire survey, key informant interview and interview of user and non-user of mechanical service and service providers have been used to collect both qualitative and quantitative data. To reveal the satisfaction level of existing FSM a calculation of customer satisfaction index using a combination of Servqual and AHP model has been used. To analyse household data regression analysis both logit and tobit model for willingness to pay and to reveal what extent corporatization model might be implemented in Khulna city priority index using AHP to identify the criteria for corporatization model has been used. To identify the challenges of service provision in the Khulna city and institutionalizing the existing service delivery, manual coding and thematic analysis has been used to analyse the qualitative data.
