Urban Heat Vulnerability and Risk Assessment for Climate Adaptation Planning: A Comparative Study of Two Metropolitan Cities in Bangladesh

This study used a multi-criteria decision-making (MCDM) approach to assess the urban heat risk that incorporates heat vulnerability and heat exposure using geospatial techniques and to quantify the degree of risk for major metropolitan cities in Bangladesh. The multi-criteria decision-making (MCDM) method is a simulation process using different criteria and factors for decision-making in the field of planning. This method prioritizes the socioeconomic aspect of heat vulnerability and heat exposure based on physio-climatic factors to generate the spatial diversity of urban heat risk profiles. This study also included a comparative analysis of heat distribution across space and an attempt to calculate the heat risk of senior citizens in the context of climate change based on the exposure factors of heat risk and access to green spaces in cities. This research will help planners and decision-makers to make precise decisions regarding land use planning, risk management, land use zonation, climate change control mechanism, adaptation planning, sustainable planning, etc. in consideration of urban heat risk.
