Baseline Study on the Socioeconomic Status of Coastal Fishing Communities, and their Local Fishing Practices and Techniques, and Knowledge of the Sundarbans and SoNG Marine Protected Area

The baseline study seeks to comprehensively understand the socioeconomic status and local fishing practices of coastal communities residing in the region spanning from the Sundarbans to the SoNG Marine Protected Area (MPA). This study’s primary objective is to facilitate informed decision-making, policy development, and targeted interventions to enhance the well-being of these communities, while also promoting sustainable fishing practices and safeguarding the region's fragile marine ecosystems. The study’s multifaceted objectives are tailored to examine various dimensions of the lives of coastal fishing communities. It assesses their employment, income, education, living conditions, and livelihoods, with a particular focus on those who depend on the SoNG MPA for their livelihoods. By exploring these socioeconomic factors, the study aims to provide insights into the challenges and opportunities faced by these communities. The study extends to investigate the intricate mosaic of local fishing practices, from techniques employed by fishermen to methods of pre- and post-harvest processing, recognizing the integral contributions of women and young individuals. Moreover, it delves into the web of relationships linking fishing communities with marine conservation and value chains, unveiling their roles within these frameworks. Additionally, it probes how these communities navigate challenges and delineates their aspirations during the annual 65-day fishing ban, showcasing their resilience. Furthermore, it delves into the realm of awareness and behaviours associated with biodiversity preservation within the region spanning the SoNG MPA to the Sundarbans, with an emphasis on the roles of women and youth. Finally, it spotlights the critical need for skill development and livelihood diversification, acknowledging that empowering communities to adapt and flourish is fundamental for their enduring well-being.
