Mohammed Shariful Islam
Assistant Professor

Mohammed Sharif Islam is an Assistant Professor in the Urban and Rural Planning Discipline at Khulna University. His research is broadly concerned with the policies that guide the public life in cities and regions. More specifically, he studies economic development policies, the growth of local and industrial economies, and the environmental issues pertaining to the growth. Sharif’s doctoral work examines the factors of the policies that lead to economic development in the American states. He tested several econometric questions and identified a set of policy choices that actually contribute to economic growth.

Besides looking at economic choices, his work identifies environmentally sustainable measures that are ecologically informed and functionally efficient to deal with anthropogenic activities. For a regional landscape in western Canada, his research engaged network modeling to recognize the flow of some ecological agents, which produced a set of discernible policy options for the land-use plan of the region. He also conducted several studies on location based access to services for cities and regions in the south-western part of Bangladesh. For a list of his published research, please follow the publication tab.

Methodologically, Sharif uses more of quantitative techniques such as maximum likelihood estimation. He also specializes in geographic analysis and network theory.

At Khulna University, Sharif teaches economics, statistics, and landscape design as foundational courses, and urban economics, regional planning, remote sensing, and geographic information systems as advanced undergrad courses. His graduate courses include planning tools and ethics, research design, and public policy.
