Bangladesh is facing serious challenges from land degradation, including soil erosion, loss of fertility, flooding, salinization, and deforestation. These problems threaten food security, livelihoods, and the environment. While the government has set national targets to achieve Land Degradation Neutrality (LDN), success depends on adapting these goals to local conditions.
This project focuses on the southwest coastal region of Bangladesh, an area under pressure from climate change, salinity intrusion, and development activities. The research team from Khulna University will use advanced geospatial tools, satellite imagery, and soil analysis to understand how land is changing and where restoration is most needed. By combining scientific data with local community perspectives, the project aims to set realistic, location-specific LDN targets.
The work will involve mapping land use changes, analyzing soil health, and engaging communities to identify sustainable land management practices. Localized targets will help communities take ownership of solutions, improve monitoring, and inspire broader national strategies.
The project will run for three years (2024–2027) with full support requested from the BAS-USDA Endowment Program. Expected outcomes include practical recommendations for land restoration, stronger community participation, and policy insights that align local actions with national and global commitments such as the UN Sustainable Development Goals.
Ultimately, this initiative seeks to protect Bangladesh’s coastal ecosystems, strengthen food security, and build resilience against climate change by empowering local communities with knowledge and tools for sustainable land management.
