History and Institutional Heritage

The history of the Law Discipline is bound up with the wider development of Khulna University, the principal public research university of southwestern Bangladesh. Established under the Khulna University Act, 1990, the University began teaching on 31 August 1991 on a campus beside the Moyur River at Gollamari.

Over the following decades the University expanded across the humanities, engineering, life sciences and social sciences. What remained absent was a public law school in the region capable of delivering legal education of national standing. The School of Law was instituted in late 2016 as the University’s seventh academic school to meet that need, and the Law Discipline was founded as its core academic unit. The first cohort of students began classes on 1 January 2017.

The Discipline’s earliest years were given to establishing its flagship four-year Bachelor of Laws (Honours), designed to meet the qualifying standards of the Bangladesh Bar Council and the University Grants Commission. Between 2019 and 2021 the academic offering broadened considerably. The Master of Laws was introduced with both coursework and mixed-mode thesis tracks, and doctoral research opportunities opened through the Ph.D. in Law.

A period of curriculum reform followed in 2021 and 2022. In keeping with the University’s role in introducing Outcome-Based Education to Bangladesh, the Discipline restructured its undergraduate and graduate curricula to meet Level 7 of the Bangladesh National Qualifications Framework and the standards of the Bangladesh Accreditation Council, integrating a General Education component, clinical legal training and institutional internships.

Since 2022 the Discipline has extended its work outward. The Khulna University Moot Court Society was founded and has since taken top honours in national and international mooting competitions. In March 2023 the Discipline hosted the First National Conference on Legal Dynamics in the Contemporary World, bringing jurists, academics and researchers from across the country to Khulna.

Today the Discipline sustains a full-time faculty, modern teaching facilities, and a growing body of alumni working in the judicial service, corporate practice and civil society.
