Standing at the Rungs: How Female Domestic Workers Perceive Social Status and Dignity through the Lens of MacArthur’s Ladder

This study explores how female domestic workers perceive their social status, dignity, and relative position in society using MacArthur’s Subjective Social Status Ladder. Adopting a qualitative approach, the research examines lived experiences of respect, exclusion, and self-worth shaped by class, gender, and occupational hierarchies. The findings illuminate how subjective social positioning influences workers’ well-being and sense of dignity, offering insights for labor policy, social protection, and advocacy aimed at improving the rights and recognition of domestic workers.
