Abstract:
In the coastal region
of Bangladesh, one of the most significant problems is salinity intrusion. The
salinity levels are rising at an alarming rate, impacting around 53% of the
coastal regions. The present study aimed
to investigate the
present status and impact of salinity
intrusion on land use, biodiversity and ecosystem services at Khalilnagar,
Tala, Satkhira. Soil and water salinity measurement, key informant interview
(KII), a standardized questionnaire survey and Focused Group Discussion (FGD)
were carried out. It was found that in late March to April salinity intrusion
occurs mostly and it has a detrimental impact on the socioeconomic status of
the residents of the study area by changing the land use 5-10% in every year
from agricultural field to shrimp farm, thus mostly affected crop is Aman. Fresh water fish diversity has
become affected and some species are now rarely seen. Alternatively Shrimp
culture farms have been increased. Biodiversity of birds and reptiles also
affected along with decreasing fruit and timber trees whereas mangrove trees
are increasing. Consequently, the majority of the communities in the research
area are shifting their occupations from being agricultural farmers to being
shrimp farmers, shopkeepers, laborers etc., and even some of the localities
have migrated to new places. Another vital problem in the study area is the
lack of safe drinking water having no salinity. With the help of the government
and local NGOs, some time-sensitive immediate actions must be taken to protect against
salinity intrusion and to identify appropriate solutions to salinity concerns.
