Summary
Freshwater mud eel (Monopterus cuchia), commonly known as Cuchia; is one of the good candidate species for aquaculture in Bangladesh (Ahmed et al., 2009; Miah et al., 2015). Cuchia is tasty, nutritionally richin nutrients with high market value and very popular among the ethnic peoples (Hossain et al., 2006; Barman et al., 2013, Miah et al., 2015). They are nocturnal and used to find muddy environment i.e muddy ponds, swamps, rice fields sometime wet land hiding under crevices, water hyacinth and stones with inhaling very limited oxygen so they have possessed versatile mortality (Narejo et al., 2003, Chakraborty et al., 2010, Miah et al., 2015). Still there is no suitable technique has been adopted for cuchia farming , therefore the cuchia trade off completely depends on natural sources resulting gradual declining the population due to overfishing (Ahmed et al, 2009, Miah et al., 2015). Considering the increasing demand in the international markets (FAO, 2005; Hossain et al., 2006), eel fishery has been gaining popularity among the coastal community of greater Khulna and Chittagong regions as well as grater Mymenshing, Shylet and Comilla region (Hossain and Mazid, 1995, Hossain et al., 2006). On the other hand the aquaculture of cuchia is not so easy like other freshwater species because they used to make hole in the pond bottom (Chakraborty et al., 2010, Hasan et al., 2012). This research will try to adopt effective culture technique of mud eel. On the other hand, the biochemical and nutritional components of this species were not intensively studied, so this project will also try to analyses the proximate composition of this species.
