Prof. Dr. Md. Saifuddin Shah was born in 1951 in a respectable family in Dinajpur. After his SSC in 1967, he was enrolled as a student of fisheries in the first ever time opened a Faculty of Fisheries in the then East Pakistan Agricultural University, now the BAU in 1967. There he obtained his B.Sc. honours in Fisheries and Masters in Fisheries Biology degrees respectively in 1972 and 1973. Based on his results in bachelor and master degrees he was selected as a Fellow in teaching in the Fisheries Biology and Genetics Department in 1974. He became a Lecturer in 1976 and an Assistant Professor in 1979. In the meantime he had been away to the UK in 1980 to do his Ph.D. degree in Fish Genetics and Biotechnology from the University of Wales. After about a year and half of coming back from UK in 1984 he had left BAU and assumed the position of a Chief Scientist in the Bangladesh Fisheries Research Institute, Mymensingh, steering and guiding the Institute’s aquaculture research for about 8 years with commendable enthusiasm and success.  After that he again moved to teaching position in Khulna University joining there as a Professor in Fisheries in 1995. He served there as Head of the Department for over 7 years; other statutory positions he served in Khulna University are: Dean, Life Science School, Academic Council Member, Syndicate Member, Students Affairs Director, Provosts of the Halls of residence etc. He was appointed as the Vice-chancellor of Khulna and served in the position for over 4 years during 2008 to 2012 with significant achievements in academic, research and infrastructural facilities development in the university. Prof. Shah has written a book on Fish Genetics entitling ‘Genetics of Aquaculture and Fisheries Management’ and a book on poem named ‘Bimbito Protiti’.

He has in his credit over 100 scientific publications in different national and international journals of reputation. He travelled many countries of the world and participated in numerous seminars, symposia and workshops in home and abroad.
