Capacity building to address climate change in Bangladesh and Ghana with special reference to conservation of saline and drought tolerant species

The FMRTDKU took part very recently in a collaborative linked project under DelPHE Round4 programme funded by DFID-British Council from September 2009 to August 2012. In association with Department of Zoology, Rajshahi University (DZRU) in Bangladesh, The University of Ghana established the Volta Basin Research Project (UG-VBRP) in Ghana, Animal and Plant Sciences, University of Sheffield (APSSU), and School of Environment, Natural Resources and Geography, University of Bangor in UK; the FMRTDKU has added unique perspective to the project. While the present project was developed addressing the Millennium Development Goals (MDG) under changing global climate, the FMRTDKU has put effort radically to achieve the goals of the project, and thus enhanced its education and research milieu. Under this present linked project, the discipline actively added such new dimension as conducting research on salinewater utilization, notably mud crab fishery in the Sundarbans, proposing new course focusing fisheries and climate change for post-graduate students at FMRTDKU, and providing necessary training and workshop opportunities for academic staff, researchers, students, policy makers, and wider community (e.g. coastal poor fisher-folks) who are severely vulnerable to climate-change induced disasters. The FMRTDKU, in virtually, attained competency to play role in enhancing resilience of wider community adapting changing climate, and in any further collaborative project.
